- Description
- The Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) is a rack-mountable plug-in module for bi-directional data transmission in WDM network systems. The device has electrical and optical interfaces. The WSS is used to reconfigure the signal path. It enables selective switching of wavelengths in optical networks. The device receives signals on an input channel, splits the channel wavelengths optically (demultiplexing) and switches the separated wavelengths to one of the n-output ports (switching), on which the signals are then sent on the separated wavelength in the network. In the opposite direction, the wavelengths of n-input channels are combined (multiplexing) and switched to an output channel (switching). For route selection, each channel can be dynamically switched (routing) independently of the other channels.
