- Description
- A Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS). The WSS works bi-directionally. Signal paths of each incoming wavelength can be switched to any output port to send data on a different network path (so-called selective switching). The WSS receives signals on an input channel, splits the channel wavelengths optically (demultiplexing) and transmits them to one of the four output ports ("switching") on which the signals are then sent in the network on the selected wavelength. In the opposite direction, the wavelengths of four input channels are combined (multiplexed) and switched to one output channel. For route selection, each channel can be dynamically switched ("routing") independently of the other channels. WSS's are used exclusively for data transmission in DWDM networks and essential for the selective switching and routing of digital data in such networks. The item has no other application.
