Description
An electric vehicle charging cable which is used to connect electric vehicles to the electric grid to charge up the car's batteries. There are a few configurations depending on exact application (single phase/three phase, power rating, and grid connector type) but the connection to the electric vehicle is always the same. The cable consists of insulated wire with a signal conductor (0.50mm^2 to 0.75mm^2), and 3 or 5 power conductors (depending if single phase, or three phase) ranging from 2.5mm^2 to 6.0mm^2 dependent on power rating (16A or 32A). The cable is rated up to 1000V and fitted with connectors - one female IEC 62196 Type 2 connector designed to fit exclusively into electric vehicles, and either a male IEC 62196 Type 2 connector for plugging into Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE - an EV charger), or a BS1363 13A female plug with a control box for plugging into a household mains electric socket. The control box handles communication with the electric vehicle, and has a relay to isolate / energize the cable when it detects it is plugged in to the car. There is no change to the AC charging current - i.e. there are no rectifiers or transforms and it is supplied at 240V AC / 50Hz direct from the grid. The Charging Cables are supplied individually to consumers, packaged in retail/cardboard packaging.
