Description
A test loop translator. This is an item of telecommunications equipment designed to emulate test signals that are sent from satellites. During typical operational conditions a sample of the transmit signal is emitted from the earth station to the TLT device (which would usually be sent directly to the satellite). The TLT unit then converts this signal into an equivalent downlink signal at which it can be analysed. Using a Test Loop Translator, users at a satellite earth station can carry out various tests and evaluate system performance without connecting to a real satellite. This allows the users to carry out analysis, alignment and system testing without incurring satellite airtime costs and the risk of interfering with other satellite users. Thus, it has applications during equipment development, qualification, troubleshooting and in-service routine monitoring. The system would typically comprise a mixer and a fixed or preset local oscillator . More advanced versions, allow the signal level, frequency bands and other parameters to be controlled for various scenarios. Appearance wise it is a 1U size rack-mounted unit with a display panel on the front and two vents with various connectors for power and communications at the rear.
