- Description
- Waveguide Switch is a hollow metallic structure that guide electromagnetic waves, at a lower loss at high frequencies compared to coaxial cables. Waveguide switches are integral components in waveguide systems used to control the direction of electromagnetic waves or to selectively connect or disconnect different waveguide paths. Whether through mechanical, electrical, or optical means, waveguide switches help provide flexible, efficient signal routing in high-frequency systems. Within the application of satellite communications, the antenna ground segment is responsible for controlling the communication links, routing signals between different subsystems, and ensuring that the signals are directed to the correct equipment at the right time. The switch is positioned between two sections of a waveguide or at the intersection of multiple waveguide branches. Depending on the design, the waveguide might need to be modified to include a port or actuator for the switch. They are designed to handle high-frequency, high-power signals with low loss where coaxial switches are used in more general, lower-frequency applications and are easier to implement. For satellite communications, where weak signals may need to travel vast distances, having minimal signal loss as it passes through switches ensures the system works effectively even in low-signal conditions. The switching voltage is from 24V DC to Max voltage of 480V.
