- A mild steel captive nut/spring. A captive 'u' or 'spire' nut/clip/spring that provides a simple solution to the problem of using machine or self-tapping screws in otherwise unsuitable thin sheet materials, such as sheet metal, fibreboard, hardboard, moulded plastics etc. The washer does have a specific thread size for a bolt and screw to pass through. It is made from high quality carbon steel which is zinc phosphate coated (not of stainless- steel). Passivated spring steel is not the same as stainless steel, but it involves a process applied to stainless steel. passivation is the name of the process used to apply the coating.
