You can find an employee’s tax code on:

  • PAYE online
  • payroll software
  • P6 or P9 coding notices

You can work out your new employee’s tax code (opens in new tab), if you are not sure.

If the employee’s tax code ends in W1, M1 or X, it means they are on a week 1 or month 1 basis. This is also called a non-cumulative tax code.

It means tax is calculated based only on their current pay period, not the whole tax year.

A Scottish tax code starts with an ‘S’.

A Welsh tax code starts with a ‘C’.

Enter the employee’s tax code using capital letters and without spaces. For example, 1257L, S1257LX, C1257LW1.
