Use this service to apply for recognition as a charity by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for tax purposes. Your charity may be able to claim tax relief and claim tax back on income received where tax has already been paid (for example, on bank interest and Gift Aid donations).
Before you start
To apply for recognition by HMRC online, you will need your charity’s:
- bank account details (account name, number and sort code)
- charitable evidence (governing document, regulator details, charitable objectives and financial information)
- contact details (official name and address, correspondence address and phone number)
- officials’ details (names, addresses and phone numbers, dates of birth and National Insurance or ID card numbers)
All of your charity’s officials should read the HMRC fit and proper persons guidance.
Your charity must be established for ‘charitable purposes only’, have its own UK bank or building society account and be based in the UK, another country in the European Union, or in Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway.
You will also need to post copies of any supporting documents that you have used to make your application to HMRC.
