Description: Simulated devices used to safely teach and train users in the properties and characteristics of ionising radiation contamination. The device is used by training establishments, universities, research and industry to train staff in a completely safe environment how to monitor and measure for "radioactive" contamination on surfaces and the physical properties of Alpha and Beta radiation. The simulators take the form of hand held instruments mimicking real contamination meters but operate using a fake radioactive contamination source and a gas detector built into the meter. The "source" is a safe, harmless liquid chemical which is applied to a surface and slowly evaporates - this produces a small gas cloud just above the surface which can then be detected by the simulated meter via a probe housing a gas detector. The reading from the gas detector is converted in a Counts per second reading as would be found on a real instrument of this type. The meters are made from plastic or metal casings with a lcd screen, PCB and keypad, and a metal or plastic bodied probe in a number of different forms which houses the gas detector. The instruments are assembled in the UK from manufactured or purchased components. The simulators are usually packaged in a carry case containing the instruments, manuals, batteries/charger etc. The simulators cannot be used to measure real radiation and could not be modified to do so.
