The architecture of this work, featuring abstract geometric shapes, recalls ethnic jewellery and shares similarities with the abstract language of the architect’s metal sculpture of the 1950s. The present lot also illustrates the architect’s interest in oriental culture. Variations of the mirror are documented in the books by Guia Sambonet, Ettore Sottsass: Mobili e qualche arredamento (1985), by Edoardo Paoli, L'importanza dello Specchio (1949) and in the period publication Domus (1959).

Tenreiro is often referred to as the father of Brazilian modernism. The furniture designer was born in Portugal and moved to Rio de Janeiro in the late 1920s. In the early 1940s, he established his studio, and by the 1950s, he was designing furniture for modern architects. The sofa is documented in the book by Soraia Cals, Tenreiro (1998). Description: A smoke and heat stimuli head unit. Made of moulded plastic. Incorporating a smoke capsule, PCBS, a stepper motor, a smoke generator (miniature heat exchanger) assembly ani a heat testing assembly. With moulded silicon membrane around the rim of a transparent top plastic cup and a moulded silicon keypad on the handle. Designed to be placed over a smoke/heat detector in order to set it off by generating a synthetic 'smoke' from the liquid held in the smoke capsule. The liquid is pumped out of the smoke capsule using a small peristaltic pump into a heat exchanger assembly which turns it to a vapour. The heat exchanger uses a heated nickel wire in a capillary tube to rapidly heat the liquid to form the vapour, under the control of a microcontroller. The vapour is condensed into small liquid particles which are suspended in the air and blown by a small fan out of a duct in the direction of the detector under test. The product also generates a small jet of heated air, which is blown out of the duct at the detector.
