Each waveguide has a specific cut off frequency; below this frequency, signals cannot propagate. The design is tailored to ensure that only desired frequencies pass through efficiently. A waveguide run/structure typically comprises several key components, which work together to guide electromagnetic waves effectively. Flanges (made of brass) are used to connect sections of the waveguide securely. They often include gaskets to ensure an airtight seal. Connectors facilitate connections between waveguide segments and other components within the satcom system. Waveguide bends are curved sections that enable changes in direction while maintaining wave propagation and brackets/mounts are used to hold it in place and ensure stability during operation. Loads absorb any excess power at the end of the waveguide to prevent reflections. The couplers allow coupling of power between two waveguides and splitters distribute the signal to multiple outputs while maintaining performance. Attenuators measure and control signal loss within the waveguide. Each component plays a vital role in ensuring efficient wave propagation, minimizing losses, and maintaining the desired performance of the waveguide run.
